It doesn't win you football games. It doesn't pull you through surgery.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

I can attest that years of (admittedly half-hearted) prayer will not enable one to win the lottery, find a lost passport, or let a car go for another 50 miles on an empty tank.

I thought there were studies showing prayer helped the healing process in the same way as meditation i.e. in a more direct mind-over-matter way rather than catching the eye of the big fella and getting a reprieve while the 6-year-old heathen in the next bed dies of brain cancer.

I don't see any reason why the weak and delusional people ought not have a crutch to help them through the struggles of their pointless lives.

I have many relatives who are seriously practicing religion. And they tell me the purpose of prayer is not to have health benefit, or any benefit for that matter, as prayer or any fulfillment of religious commandment should not be intended to further one's own interest (that's what business is for; or if it's about health, that's what modern medecine is for), its accomplishment is supposed to be good in itself.

So anyone who believes in prayer is weak, delusional and lives a pointless life? Wow, thats pretty narrow minded.

I'll pray that you learn to respect other people's opinions.

Kidding about the prayer part but seriously that is some twisted thinking. There are lots of kind hearted, decent, very intelligent people out there that believe in prayer/religion/god and live or lived meaningful lives. Gandhi comes to mind.....oh wait he was definitely weak and delusional.

Well, the thing about this is.. God's kept proof of his existence from the world for a purpose... Why would he blow the cover now? Don't you think he can skew the results?

YOu get a D- for responding to my entirely remedial troll. THat wasn't even goot bait, that was an I-can't-type-anything-longer-than-one-sentence-while-I'm-sitting-here-eating-lunch-troll. Do not Pass Go or click on it if you see it at the bottom of the page. Return immediately to Message Board 101 to review the lecture on sucker MCs.

Wrong, BR. Open your definition of prayer to things that aren't just religious and you'll find that it can help. Mindfulness - a prayer like psychological intervention (as I'm using it) - has been shown to help A LOT. It's the core component of the ONLY successful treatment of borderline personality disorder, for example. And it's been shown to help in drug addiction recovery, depression and anxiety.

Prayer gets a bad rap because of the religious zealots who claim it can solve anything. If we could just get it away from the religious freaks, it would be a good thing.

Actually I allways thought prayer was something the self righteous and pompous could poke fun at so they don't feel so insignificant... So I guess it does have a purpose after all.

I find it amusing that the very people to stand up and cry foul at the drop of a hat or at the slightest hint of any infringement of their rights are the first people to actively go out and infringe on the rights of people to belive in Religion.

It's not about prayer, it's about faith.

You have every right to go out and pray for that promotion, whiter teeth, a better life...

And we have every right to laugh at you!

Besides, what would happen if prayers really did work? Wouldn't that be dangerous? And even if you do believe in God, you gotta admit that Heaven is an idea that has human fingerprints all over it. A dimensional of eternal peace and happiness? I got one word for you: BORING. Unless, of course, they hand out some crazy mind-altering drugs there. .
