Boot parttion disappeared and can't re-mount

My Dual 533 running 10.2.8 crashed on me. I came back from work and instead of being asleep the screen was on, only the mouse and keyboard were frozen.Un-plugging and replugging the mouse only succeeded in turning off the red optics. On restarting the comp went to my 9.2 drive and restarting with alt pressed fails as the 10 partion isn't seen and neither disk utility or Drive 10 will mount the partion, or effect a repair.

I've since installed 10.2 on the other half of the drive in the second partion, which of course did always mount when running the utilities and installer. When I restarted after installation only the one partion is seen, as an 19.gb drive, not with another partion with all my stupid not recently backed up data. How the hell can I get out of this? I thought i had selected install OS9 drivers as on option but the entire drive doesn't show up when restarting in 9.2

The problem seems to be in the volume structure if drive 10 is to be beieved. Yours on the edge, Alex

Take out your 3rd-party RAM, and re-boot. Exact same thing happened to me.

All my RAM is third party and all three 512Mb Dimms show up ok so I feel it's the disk, not the RAM which is the issue. I spent £76 on Disk Warrior today, believing it's rather bold claim, " With DiskWarrior you're always assured you'l get the results you desire." If they meant that i desired for it to see the partition , give it its' correct title , start rebuilding the directory and then display a message that the disk was too damaged for the operation and that it seemed that another disk utility had destroyed directory data, then they're as mad as i am. How do I recover my data now?

Diskwarrior didn't recover your data? That spells trouble, but I guess I don't have to tell you that. It might be that Drive 10 destroyed some data, who knows. Or it may just be that Diskwarrior has too much pride to admit that it can't fix something.

Anyway. What you could do is give Norton Systemworks a run. Frankly, if Diskwarrior didn't fix things, I'm very sceptical as to what Systemworks might fix. And the newest Systemworks ( v.8 ) has an all time low score on Versiontracker.

An other app exists that might help you though: Data Rescue X. I have never used it myself, but the versiontracker folks are rather enthusiastic (for how much that counts... someone claims it worked where Drive 10 and Diskwarrior failed). I believe it differs in Diskwarrior in that it doesn't attempt to recover your entire drive (i.e. make it usable again), but it just scours the drive for files that it may be able to recover.

    Relevant link (versiontracker.com).

If these usual suspects don't work, you may be out of luck. It'll be time to think about how much money the data is worth, and if enough, contact a professional data recovery company.

I would give Data Rescue a try though. I hope it works out. Crashed disks truly are one of the worst computer disasters one can encounter.
