ipod not being recognized?

i'm trying to see what software version i have on my ipod. ideally i'd like to update it to the most recent version. i have a 20 gig with solid state wheel but actual buttons. when i plug in the ipod the installer still says "plug in an ipod to update it" or something to that effect. i'mm assuming that if my software version were newer or incompatible it would still at least still show up on top where that info is.

    The info is on your iPod somewhere under 'About' or something. And when you update, make sure that you don't have the lock locked.
