I'm just wondering, if someone with a mac account in the US would send an iTMS gift certificate to someone in Europe, could he/she be able to download a song, bypassing the US-only restriction?

I'm ready to find out !

Send me a PM for my mailadres

I can see it now: A US cover front that exchanges money for those Allowance accounts.

This is a brilliant idea. I'm going to go to the other Mac forums, claim to be from Europe and see how many people I can get to send 99¢ gift certificates for my "experiment".

I think we should all chip in and give Dyslexic Manupilator an allowance. But no explicit lyrics, youngster!

But then those of us up in Canada will come begging for an allowance !!

I was actually going to have my lone Yankee connection try and send me a gift certificate but unfortunately she doesn't have a US credit card yet. Grrrr....

Well, there was an extremely generous AImember who actually sent me a 10$ iTMS gift certificate !

    Unfortunately, it doesn't work...

You need an iTMS account in the first place, which you cannot create without a valid credit card billing address in the US.

The gift certificate you receive is simply added to your existing account.

Believe it or not, there are people out there trying to sucker people into sending money via paypal in exchange for gift certificates, see

    here , and they charge 10 % commission !

Which makes the only trick having a friend (a good friend ) let you access their account. Too bad.

I offered to help you and now you call me a crook. Thanks, that's nice.

I took a leap of faith on Thursday and sent $10 gift certificates to AI and MacRumors members from Europe. They've had no problems redeeming them. Also, fyi, PayPal charges 69 cents for a $10 transaction.

I'd send you a gift certificate just to prove you wrong but you've just said it doesn't work for you.

I don't get it. If one needs a credit card from the United States to open a iTMS account, why would that person need you to send them gift certificates? Couldn't they just bill music to the same credit card?

You don't need an account to redeem a certificate.

I don't know how it works, but in the redeem page it says "Certificates expire two years from the date of issuance, or two years from the date of last activity if applied to an itunes accound"

To be honest, I don't know what's going on anymore...

I tried to redeem the G/C once more, signing in with my .mac account.

I clearly remember having seen the option "none" in the credit card selection earlier this afternoon but now it's gone

That seemed the only possibility to create an iTMS account without a credit card number but I was still stuck with the american address.

If you friends really managed to redeem the G/C's you sent them, I would be very interested in finding out how.

    No hard feelings I hope
