"EU elite are filthy pigs"

Saw this article earlier today...Umberto Bossi, a member of the Italian government, declared that the EU's "elite" are determined to destroy Europe's Christian heritage. For reasons that I am not quite clear on, he added that they want to "make paedophilia as easy as possible".

Part of the issue here is that the EU is currently in the process of drafting a constitution. One of the ongoing debates is whether or not the constitution should contain a specific reference to Christianity. A couple of member states and soon-to-be member states are adamant that there should be a reference to God with a specific mention of Christianity. Other states are content to keep a mention of God in there, but not to single out the Christian faith. Still others want no mention of God at all.

The other issue is that Silvio Berlusconi, the current Prime Minister of Italy and a billionaire businessman who dominates the Italian media, may also be a criminal who is abusing his political power to avoid being tried for fraud and bribing judges. Earlier this year, Berlusconi rushed a law through parliament that would grant him immunity from prosecution in Italy for as long as he remained in office.

Bossi is a political ally and reportedly close friend of Berlusconi, and his attack on the EU brushed on proposed extradition reforms (which would allow for EU wide arrest warrants to be issued) in the draft constitution. If these reforms go ahead, Berlusconi will become eligible for extradition to Spain, where he will have to face charges of fraud that have been pending since 2001. Berlusconi has managed to keep from having to face these charges until now, and if the EU warrants do not come into play will remain immune as long as he remains in power.

The whole EU Constitution / God thing is probably a thread in its own right. What I think is really interesting here is the way in which Burlosconi has brazenly used his political office to change the law to suit his personal needs. He was already the richest man in Italy, has he now managed to turn a first world democracy of almost 60 million people into his own personal fiefdom? Is Bossi attacking the EU in the broadest possible terms in an attempt to turn the Italian electorate against the proposed constitution?

    Bossi is an idiot.

Apart from that, he was highly successful with his separatist "Northern league" movement that thrived on the notion that the northern parts of Italy (which are in fact richer than the EU average) are being robbed by the "greedy elite" sitting in Rome (which is not part of northern Italy). According to him, all the beautiful money is wasted in the south. Incredibly enough, this populist movement grew quite strong and is now part of the Italian government.

He uses any scapegoat he can find - esp. if it is in the form of an anynomous bureaucracy or an evil and equally anonymous elite - to cover up that Berlusconis (and his) government has not been able to achieve anything remarkable - apart from bending the law to evade a criminal investigation.

Of course the EU bureaucracy is full of pedophiles...

Just Italian politics. But that's a matter of tradition as much as anything else.

Umberto Bossi is a populist, an italian equivalent of Le Pen, who use the fear, hate of citizens in order to be popular. Populists use the less respectables feelings and behavior of people in order to get votes. They claim to be moral, but they are just the reverse.

In short when i read this article, i just think that he is an asshole.
