Question on .mac HomePage name

Ordered .mac and just got the retail box. But before I choose my user name, wanted to check something first. Will my user name permanently become part of the web address of my home page? For instance, if my user name is johndoe, would my HomePage web site address be something like http://www.apple.homepage.johndoe.mac, or will I later be able to choose the name for my home page? For instance, say my hobby is model trains. Will I be able to choose my HomePage name to be something like http://www.apple.homepage.modeltrains.mac, or will I be stuck with http://www.homepage.johndoe.mac? Sorry for the long question! Your replies are appreciated!!

Your username is fixed, for email, homepage and everything else .Mac. Apple makes it very explicit that you will not be able to change it.

And the way domain names work, you can't change the end of your address at will anyway, because that's what your top-level domain is (and it's fixed). Anyhow, Apple doesn't allow that either.

My suggestion is to use something sensible you'll stick with and not regret, and then play around with folders.

Your URLs would look like this:

    http://homepage.mac.com/user_name/folder_name

as mentioned before: you can't change your name at .mac...-

    BUT:

find some internet provider who sells "adresses" - over here in germany, it's fancy to have you own adress as www.johndoe.de...- these providers offer, to own just the adress WITHOUT webspace etc.-

    why?

because you can redirect from this adress!!

so, if you can buy www.littletrains.us (which is much easier to remind) you can redirect from there to http://www.homepage.mac.com/johndoe/...tletrains.html or whatever structure you will give your .mac website...!

have fun and let them drive!
