How different in performance is, say, a G4 iBook 14" 1 Gig and a similarly priced 867 Powerbook?

I want a new portable pretty badly, and the iBooks have brought some confusion into the selection process for me because I can't figure out where they fit compared to the Powerbooks.

Does anyone have a link to a site that compares benchmarks or something?

I would probably go with the iBook. It's faster, has a larger HD, better graphics chip, and larger screen. But, i would say they are the same, is terms of performance, because of the L2 cache. I'd get the ibook.

Are you planning on using it as dektop replacement? If you are, the PowerBooks' ability to drive higher resolution external monitors would be useful.

Slightly OT: any news on whether or not the external monitors Open Firmware hack works on the iBook G4?

According to an Accelerate Your Mac! reader, the hack works.
