iPod firewire problem...

Not sure if this is Genius Bar material or not, but anyway... my old 20GB iPod (the one with the firewire port in the top, not the newer models) has developed a frustrating problem: my Mac can't see it. I can charge as before through the firewire cable, but when I plug it in, I get a couple of churns from the iPod's harrdrive before the screen says that it's safe to disconnect. I can't update the software, add more music or do a hard reset... any suggestions or clues please!
