Dual 800 G4 vs Single 1.2Ghz G5

Yeah I know it's a stupid topic but anyway.....

Assuming G5 is having a debut in MWSF and the mid end G5 is equipping the 1.2Ghz G5

The current slow silver Dual 800 should be dropping price to the same level of the mid end G5.

If this is the case which one should you go for?

depends on whether the G5 has across-the-board performance increases, or is just a G3 with a 64,000bit Altivec gimmic.

Hell, either one, I'd take the G5, but I would like to see something that didn't require thousand-dollar software to shine. For Apple's sake anyways.

Yea, I would take a G5 on the belief it would kill anything Apple has to date ( along with AMD and Intel )

DDR, .13nm, faster bus, and all the other techno jargin that I don't understand would seemingly destroy everything, muhhahahahaa!

    I want one!

I personally won't buy G5 until October because of my computer loan

Rumor has it that the G5 is at least twice as fast as the G4 cycle per cycle, BUT the Altivec unit is only on par.

So, if you're doing lot's of photoshop work - or rather, basically anything that relies heavily on Altivec functions AND the application that relies on these Alitvec functions IS multi-threaded THEN go for the Dual G4 ...

(note: does anybody know for certain of an app that actually adheres to that laundry list of features? Like, perhaps photoshop? or FCP3?)

However, for anything else - the G5 will kick it's ass.

Or so we've been led to believe anyway.

Oh there's that dasterdly ambiguity again - drat!

Why is this topic stupid. I think this topic poses a good question considering the G5 is coming out in 10 days.

I would take the G5 because it would kick ass, maybe even in ps we don't really know yet, and just for bragging rights <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> .

If the DP 800 Mhz G4 beat the 1.2 Ghz G5 in Photoshop, we'd se something like this:

The Photoshop bakeoff at MWSF would have to be replaced with a differenct kind of bakeoff. (This would not be a problem, though, due to the G5's amazing non-altivec speed). The whole thing would be a marketing nightmare. In addition, there are a signifcant number of professionals who will buy it if and only if it is faster in Photoshop. I believe Apple will not release a G5 which is slower than a G4 in Photoshop performance.

    Ohhhh ... there's always a detail ain't there!?

    I just realized something.

The G5 with it's vastly superior I/O, cache and bus architecture, may still trounce a dual G4, even though the dual G4 in raw horsepower speed cycle per cycle is double (two altivec units on two chips vs one on the G5), because to keep those alitvec units fed with data may be beyond the abilities of the G4's cache & bus architecture.

Now I'm not sure of this at all, but I figured, if anybody's gonna make such a big decision on any half-assed remarks of mine, I'd better play fair and say where the other half of the ass might come from.

    So there ya be.

Oh, BTW ... to all you New Yorkers out there, Rudy's leaving as Mayor, 'tis a shame - a true mensch. We could all learn a thing or two from that guy. Ciao Rudy.
