Could anyone tell me something... A year ago I installed os x.2 server in order to be able to run an ftp server on my mac. I just purchased a g5 and also received a copy of panther. I was just currious if i still need to run server to run an ftp server, or in panther is it possible to have the odd person connect to my g5 and upload or download some files via ftp?

If so, is this fairly easy to accomplish?

thanks

I reckon it'd be as easy as checking the relevant ftp-access box down below. You may need to create an account for the user that will eventually connect to your machine. In any case, i've always believed that OSX server version are just OSX version with a bit of GUI bloat for things that are present in both versions.

well ya i know that but at the apple store when i told them that i wanted to use my g4 as an ftp server and i didnt need anyother of the server stuff they still said that i need to go with os x server. and to be honest i hated it, was great but some of the peripherals i had didnt work with the server edition. for example the 9900f scanner from canon. i kept getting an error when i tried to install the software. i contacted canon and they told me that that scanner isnt built for a server????????????? I was in shock cause i told them what if i wanted to have this scanner available to the rest of my macs through this server i cant do it now, they said thats not the intention of the scanner. so there we go there top scanner and i cant run it on os x server.

    ayways

thanks for the input glad to hear something i thought but was never told by the apple store.

any one wna tmy copy of os x server i have no use for it..

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the only built-in way to create ftp accounts in OS X, unless you have Server, to create a new user?

well i seemed to have to do that in os x server anyways. Maybe there is another way, but I remember having to make a new user and giving everyone certain permissions to certain files and folders. So maybe both versions work the same the, so basicly was a waste of money...

    Correct.

Well, I believe there are other ways, but just creating a new user is the easiest.

the worst thing about all this, is that the mac i had with os x server, i cant just upgrade to panther, because on the server version, you dont get any options except to format the drive and start form scrathc, so all the programs and settings i had like for office, with entourage and stuff rules things of that nature, are gonna be gone when i upgrade to panther were as if i had jaguar then i could install panther with no problem
