I've got a HP DE100C MP3 Music server (see http://www.k0lee.com/de100c/default.htm for info) running Mandrake Linux. I've shared the music directory on the server, but am still unable to get iTunes to play music off it. I can see the direcory and browse it with no problems. The only problem is iTunes. I'm running Panther on a dual 2Ghz G5.

ok, so no one knows how to get iTunes to use a Linux SMB share as it's library?

Could an Admin move this to the Genius Bar? Maybe someone knows in there... maybe it should have been posted there in the first place...

This should be doable if you're able to mount the share in the finder. Once you do that, it's just a matter of getting iTunes to use it as the library. Go to preferences -> advanced and change the location of the library. If you've tried this and it hasn't worked, I don't know what could. Though I can't imagine that it wouldn't....

    I've already tried that...

In 10.3 the share is already mounted (along with all my other SMB shares on the Linux box) under the network icon in the finder's left column. At first I was just trying to use that, but since it didn't work, I manually mounted the share (icon now shows up on the desktop and in the finder) but still had no luck.

Well, I finally figured it out myself...

I just had to drag/drop the directory containing the MP3 files to iTunes. It created a playlist using the direcory name. Simple enough.... now why doesn't Help tell you anything about it???

So I drag/drop all the directories and let iTunes check the volume level (setting is checked in prefs). Now all the songs are listed in iTunes, but are still located on my Linux server.
