Another OS X category filled.

Awhile back I responded in a thread (can't remember which) about the lack of an affordable MS Publisher-type program for Mac OS X.

Pagemaker wasn't being ported and InDesign and Quark are overkill for the consumer.

Today's Apple eNews is promoting the new version of The Print Shop for Mac, which fills the category nicely.

$49. price, iApp integration, quartz capable. What more could you want?

I really wanted to see Adobe introduce an InDesign Elements package for $99.00, but between this release and their recent "Buy a PC" comments, I'm happy to see someone else own the category.

That's still around? I used Print Shop on an Apple II in the 1980s when I was about 10.

I remember when The Print Shop was the shiznit, and Apple was king of the home and education worlds. I never even heard of Photoshop back then, figured it was a wannabe Print Shop.

I recall the Broderbund was the publisher, and I thought a few years ago they stopped development for the Mac. Well, nice to see the name and an apparently much improved Print Shop back on Apple computers. Too bad there's no demo yet.

this program... does it restrict you to predefined 'templates' (eg calendars, cards, etc)?

Or can you start with a blank page?

If the latter, I might well be buying a copy. I've been using OmniGraffle 2 for my (very light) DTP needs, but it lacks some fairly crucial functions, especially relating to text. AppleWorks would be great if it didn't print every photo at 72dpi, for some reason.
