Strange MS Word problem
It's actually not a problem of mine, rather it's a problem that a friend is having.
She's running a 400 MHz iMac with 192 MB of RAM and OS X 10.2. Not the greatest machine for OS X but it gets the job done (I did tell her that upgrading the RAM would help). But here's the problem: Whenever she creates a new, "blank" document in Word for OS X, the "blank" document (labeled "Document1" I think, Word's standard blank document name) has a bunch of text on it from an old file of hers that was created in Office 2001. It's easy to delete it and use the document as if it's blank, but after it's saved, it launches Classic and opens the file with Word 2001. Apparently, she can't change the file's association with Word 2001, so when I visited her place today I tried trashing the preferences to no avail. I didn't have enough time to try changing the default application to Word v. X instead of Word 2001, unfortunately. But apparently that doesn't work anyway.
Just before I had to leave I managed to check the version of Word v. X she was using, and it was 10.1.0 rather than the latest version, 10.1.5. I suggested she upgrade to Word 10.1.5, and she said she would whenever she got enough free time to use her modem for that long. I'm worried that won't fix the problem, though. Apparently she's also tried reinstalling Office X and it still didn't work. She's also deleted the original file. Any idea what the problem might be? Even if changing the file's association with Word 2001 does work, I'm looking for a more permanent fix (like fixing the entire problem rather than just finding a workaround).
