Hello, my brother owns a powerbook 12 inch that he got this past summer.

He recently spilled water on/in it. I have not seen it, only heard the description he provided. He said tehre are big water spots on the display, and the whole computer was really wet. He said it was open when it happened, so i assume the water hit the screen and continued to fall into the keyboard etc.

I am wondering if there is any way to get the computer fixed. I will try to get a more comprehensive description from him next time i talk to him, but what should I ask him?

He does not have applecare for it, but it is under its warranty.

please advise me!!!

    DON'T TURN IT ON!

that is by far the most important thing. after a few days it should have dried out. when it does, turn it on. clean off hte screen with LCD wipes. you should be fine. just make sure the battery is out and it's unplugged and off until it's dry for sure.

Take out the battery, keep it open and off. Try to hang it upside down (make sure it is secured!) to let the water drain, give it a few days to dry out and than put the battery back in and fire it up. Good luck. Also, let him know to keep ANY AND ALL liquids away from that beautiful machine.

ok, here is a detailed account of the sad happenings, as told from the mouth of the horse. Really, the fingers of the owner, but it's just not as poetic that way... here goes:

"I had a cup half full [i asked him how much water, he said 4-6 ounces] sitting to the right of the computer. I accidentally knocked it over, spilling water onto the bottom portion of the display, a large portion of the keyboard, and everything in between. The computer was on at the time, I took my shirt off and tried as best as I could to clear away any visible water from the surface of the display and keyboard. After about 10 or 15 minutes, the screen went really really dim, and maybe 5 or 10 minutes after that I shut down the computer. That night, I left the display open and the computer off and kept a fan blowing on the computer. The next day, I turned on the computer and I shut it down about 5 minutes later. There were what appeared to be water stains/ marks inside the display. Whenever I would close the computer lid for any extended amount of time and reopened it, waffle-patterned water would be on the display, apparently in the shape of the spaces between the keyboard."

He said he's had it unplugged and off ever since it happened (barring the events listed above), and it happened last thursday. He said it's dry now, and wonders what to do..

    Thanks again everyone

at this point he should be able to turn it on w/o harming it.

any damage that was done has already been done. shouldn't be any new shorts to worry about.

however, with it on when he spilled, and the screen dimming on its own, that doesn't make me hopeful for him. maybe it was just a short term problem though, you never know.

The fact that he waited 10-15 minutes after the spill to turn it off worries me. That is more than enough time to cause some serious shorts. It may be time to give Apple a call. Good luck.

Edit: I misread the post, he waited up to 30 min to turn off the computer. Call Apple now, let them know the bad news. Things don't look good.

well, he seriously (actually, figuratively) was having a heart attack about this, and was freaking out, and thanks to your guy's common sensical responses, his computer, after he aired it out for the week almost, works perfectly.

seriously, he said nothing is wrong anymore. He told me to say, "thank you so much to everyone who suggested anything, I owe you my computing life!!!!"

    so thanks to everyone.

technically if he owes me his computer life, he should send it to me.

    then we'll be even.
