When is Apple going to update their website?

I've been wondering, for a while, when Apple is going to update/refine/revise/completely re-design their web site.

I don't know that that a complete re-design is in order. Some revisions and consistency improvements might go a long way.

Becoming more consistent with the UI of Mac OS X might be good too.

Thoughts?

If it ain't broken, don't fix it. The current layout works fine. It doesn't need a redesign, and Apple does update the appearance from time to time. I remember the Apple logo on the left side used to be blue.

There may be some more tweaking in the future as the website is, I believe, still undergoing that web-standard compliance update that was begun some months ago.

They should change the tabs on the front page to the new Panther style tabs at least

Apple's site is somewhat old and dated looking, however, it works extremely well. Everything is very simple and laid out right in front of you. I can't use dell's site, too confusing. I would hate to see Apple's site turn into that.

Doug Bowman (http://www.stopdesign.com/) has apparently being doing some consulting work for Apple.

Note that his latest article on alistapart.org he showed an accessible, standards compliant method for achieving a very familiar look in CSS:

(as I write this, none of the relevant images are loading, which is slightly confusing, hopefully a transient problem)

His last big project was http://www.wired.com

Well wired.com looks atrocious (but fits w/Wired's look...I guess).

I heard though Apple had hired Jeffrey Zeldman (http://www.zeldman.com/)

    Perhaps they hired both.

I don't know that a redical re-design if the site is required. Perhaps some tweaking to "clean things up" a tad.

It's not really the 'look' that he was responsible for. As you say, that has always been Wired's style and I assume the Apple look would be mostly dictated by Apple's own design team and house style. The cool stuff is all in the technology behind the website.

His own visual style is probably most visible in his entry to the CSS zen garden http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=017/017.css

    Fair enough. Good reading (links).

The old store layout was so much better. I wrote them, no response. I mean are they trying to look like some cheesy PC site like Dell? It's so crouded, and it just looks weak. Other then that the site layout rocks.
