i'd love to hear a quick fix.

First thought, can you restart the computer and boot off a system CD (holding down the C key) to make sure the CD drive works properly?

i had this happen this summer... It turned out my user file had something wrong with it... Maybe try creating yourself a new user, log in as them, and see if it recognizes your cd. This fixed it for me..

I think i found out it was a cddb preference file on my other user name... that cleared it up

booting from a startup CD wouldn't work cause it keeps spitting the disk back out.

this will shock and horrify some of you but:

the machine is running OS 8.6.

[is holding down the "C" key the way to startup from a CD in OS 8.6?]

i hesitated stating the OS because my gut instinct is that it is not 8.6 [per se] that is the problem and i didn't want to get hung up there.

    i was thinking;

could it be a firmware thing?

i dn't think it's an extension conflict because, well, there's only like 2 apps loaded on the machine [Word and IE].

i was hoping there it was some sort of software/ firmware or simple conflict problem.

if i end up having to get a replacement drive-

wherew would be the super-cheapest place to get a used or refurbed iMac CD drive?

still hoping for a simple out.

Wow, your old-school. I remember my days of OS 8. Apple made a huge hoopla about it, like it was gonna change the world. Almost OS X style. It was an improvement over 7 though. I've used every system Apple has ever released, and I'm a huge fan of X. Now I'm off topic. Sorry. I forgot what I was gonna tell you now, if I remember than I'll edit my post, till than...good luck.

Possibly a damaged CD drive. You might try a CD cleaning kit. If the optics become dirty they can't read any signal from the disk.

Hmm, 350MHz iMac - that's a slot load CD, yes?

As you Restart the computer, when it chimes, push in the CD while holding down the C key - the C is part of the firmware and not related to the operating system.

Speaking of firmware, if the CD still pops out, try restarting and holding down option-apple-O-F to invoke Open Firmware. When you get the > prompt, type reset-all and see if that helps.

Gut is beginning to tell me the slot load CD may be broken
