As good and feature rich as that iMac is, not enough people can afford to buy it. For what Apple charges at the low end (1299 LCD) in US (real) dollars, I can get the equivalent on the PC side in Canadian (65 cent on the dollar discount) dollars. By the same token the CRT iMacs aren't cheap enough too compete against budget PC's that offer bigger screens.
I'm not talking about style/performance/ease of use/user experience here. I talking about what people can afford to buy. And a lot of what people can afford to buy is crap, but at least it's cheap crap. For internet and office use, even an eMachines box isn't going to cause problems if you don't fvck with it.
If Apple wants market share they'll get the New iMac down to 899-1499 US and find a way to get the Classic iMac down to 499US. The parts in that thing ought to be cheap enough to make an ultra affordable iMac and still make a decent margin. 8x CDrw, 15" CRT, and 20GB hdd's are practically free (even at retail prices). Classic iMac should be one model only: 499. A bottom end LCD should undercut the other two by 100 bucks. They could get close now if they tried: drop the HDD from 40 to 20 and the CDrw from 24x to 8x; cut the margin a tad; lose a firewire port; drop the VRAM to 16MB.

I like watching the PC manufacturers decide to exit the consumer PC market. It gives Apple some more elbow room. In the end, I think we'll see Compaq, Dell, and Apple left standing, and that's when Apple can try and compete them to death.

I agree with you and it would be good if Apple could get to those prices and I'm sure they will. The original iMac went lower over time. One thing though, PC prices won't stay ultra low forever. The only PC box maker not in trouble is Dell so at some point prices will go up due to fewer players or an end to the price wars. Also, the new iMac doesn't need to be a market share silver bullet. Apple gains market share when it sells any model to a non Mac user.
Finally to answer your question no <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> I would not buy it since I want more power and a superdrive and I'm willing to pay for it.
Whether they should want to or not is open to debate. The best they can hope for from the current new iMac is to increase their market share amongst affluent users. Not a bad place to increase your market at all.
