Are the PCI-X slots on a G5 backward compatible?

I was wondering if the PCI-X slots on a G5 are backward compatible. The specifications for the G5 say "The PCI-X specification uses 3.3V signaling and is designed for compatibility with legacy 3.3V and Universal cards." but I don't know what a "Universal card" is. In particular, I was wondering if I could use a Canopus ADVC-50 in the G5. The sales guy at Canopus said no but he didn't seem to know a lot about the G5. I thought I would ask here before I took his word for it.
