I agree with Eugene here. the brits really ed up beer, and the irish made it worse yet.
Dark beers are far too sweet and thick to be refreshing.
i don't think i've heard a funnier thing all day. "irish made [beer] worse." lol.
Guinness is how we know God loves us.
i haven't had too many dark beers, aside from Guinness, but it is head and shoulders above anything else i've ever had. i don't think there is anything quite so perfect as a black pint from the tap after a long day of work.

Agreed!

I've never found any beer "refreshing". That's not why I drink beer.
If I want to be refreshed, nothing beats a tall, cold glass of water
I drink beer for the pure enjoyment of the taste and quality of the brew (and for the alcohol, of course!) - Guinness is the finest beer and quite possibly the best substance ever created by man.
Beer can be refreshing. Corona with lime is acceptable at a picnic, in the summer, on occasion ... or at a Mexican restaurant. I'll even order Tsingtao at a Chinese restaurant even though it tastes like piss.
Unless I'm in an actual brewpub or something, I don't think I'd ever order a Guinness. Even if I did stumble into one, I'd probably go with Harp's instead. Most beer afficionados loooove Guinness...and loooove nitro beers. I need beers with actual bubbles.
give me a hoppy blond pilsner and a cute german girl over a guiness and an irish hag anyday.
After a long day's work, I want to be refreshed, not quenched, because I work next to the water cooler and drink [water] like a fish. A nice continental beer -- or an american imitation of a nice continental beer -- will do the trick 99 times out of 100.
late edit:
To the person who said US breweries don't come close, DeGroen's Pilsner from Baltimore is the best Pilsner I've ever had, and I'm comparing it to some pretty "gourmet" German and Frisian brews.
Ever seen the head on a properly triple poured Guiness?
Uh yeah... that's from the bubbles. Fine brewed goodness.
I was drinking Guiness before there WERE tv commericals for it's cans and bottles.
And the best bottled beer is from either Belgium or Germany.
I don't think many U.S. breweries even get close.
Those aren't bubbles. That's froth. And please spell it Guinness...
I don't usually enjoy any of the dark beers, American included. The only ones I like are Anchor Porter and Stone Imperial Russian Stout. Guinness has weak effervescence, low alcohol content, too much weight and it stains your glass.
The best *light* beers are bottled in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, but that's not my style. Drinking Hoegaarden vaguely reminds me of drinking Coors Light. Watery. Occasionally I'll enjoy a nice strong Bock I guess.
I like crisp beers. Standard ales. IPAs. Lagers. Pilseners. Some Bocks.
IPAs are definitely my preferred beer. Lots of hops and kick.

I think the only beer brewed in the UK I really like is McEwans #1 Champs.
I don't like them from a bottle.
Tap only.
And since I'm not a "football" fan...
What the hell do you guys drink?

But I prefer a good Chablis over that any day.
And I prefer a 1/3 Bombay Sapphire and 2/3 Schweppes tonic water over the Chablis any day

now you've gone too far. when u offended my beer, i was miffed. when u attack my people, i get angry.
German girls are about as cute as wildboars.
DAMN. Did no one see the commercail yesterday or what?
That was one of the funniest commercials I've seen in quite a while. I was laughing out loud as I saw it and my kid just stared at me.
(I only drink the beer that I share my last name with.)
