I just bought a 12" 1 GHz powerbook last week. I wonder... how long will my powerbook last until I would have to buy a new laptop. That is at this rate, how long will it take for the powerbook to outdate to a point that I would have to buy a new one?

It depends on what you use it for. If you only use it for really basic stuff, like web browsing, email, iChat, and iTunes, it might last you three or four years (perhaps with some RAM and hard drive upgrades along the way). If you have more "intense" uses, maybe only one and a half or two years. If you are like murbot, it'll last until March or so

1.5-2 years??? umm I think not. Apple care will fix that little problem right up.

Which little problem, I don't think one was specified? I believe Luca was saying 1.5-2 years -- tops -- of being technologically competitive before upgrades (or a new system) will be neccessary to maintain an edge on graphics and other intensive programs. Applecare sure isn't going to help with that?

It will last as long as you make it before you scrape together enough money to buy a new comptuer.

I'm hoping for 2-3 years out of my powerbook...3-4 optimistically. It may even end up lasting longer I buy a G5 next summer. Or dramatically less if i sell it before I think G5 PowerBooks are coming out

yeah, I use it for pretty basic things. the most is warcraft III the least and probably what I use it most for is typing up papers. What would the resell value be for this computer in 1, 3, 5 years?

I kept my Rev. A TiBook 500 (bought Feb 2001) until I picked up my 15" 1.25 AlBook at the end of September. The main reasons I upgraded were for DVD-R (even CD-R, the Rev. A didn't have a burner of any kind), better video and DVI out. If my Ti had a CD-R (at least) I would've held off, but I was tired of not being able to get other people data on the fly.

As for my Ti, I sold it for $800 24 hours after I put it on powerbookcentral.com. Not bad for an almost 3 year old computer.
