Panther Update Cycle?

Posted:
in macOS edited January 2014
Now that Panther has been unleashed and a minor update supposedly fixing File Vault and Firewire 800 drives has been issued, what do you believe to be likely in the first major update to Panther? What added functionality do you see in Panther through the point updates?

From other threads I'm under the impression that plenty of bug fixes have been accomplished and more are being worked. Does anyone recall the timeframe of the Jaguar update cycle? Do you believe Panther will follow the Jaguar update cycle timeline?

This forum is all about speculation so how about we all take a stab at it and see what everyone comes up with.

I hope they get my USB flight sim pedals working again. I hate having to switch to Jaguar whenever I want to use the flight simulator app.

For the most part, the features you get with 10.3 are all you're getting until 10.4. The x.x.X updates are almost always strictly bug fixes and expanded support for existing features, adding the occasional minor feature here and there.

There was no specific set timeline for Jaguar's updates. They just came when they were ready. Here's a run-down of 10.2's updates:

    Brad,

Those are a lot of fixes and a lot of additional functionality. That said, what do you see coming in the first major update? Is File Vault actually fixed with that small update?

Given the number of issues to deal with, I would expect a cycle not unlike Jaguar with the 10.3.6 iteration being a pretty fine operating system.

The first *major* update will be 10.4. As Brad said, there are very rare major changes that occur between 10.x releases. All the issues he pointed out (with the exception of journalling) were considered minor and bug fix releases. There will be no major functionality implemented before 10.4 (IMHO).

    i'd hope they'd fix this

Something to definitely fix due to the extremity of the failure when it happens. But how often do you create file names of more than 1000 characters/glyphs even by accident? Even file names with asian fonts rarely get that big.

    Ooooh, that's a fun one.

    Exceedingly rare, potentially exceedingly catastrophic.

One I'd fix, if I were in charge, simply because it's the oddball edges of your test data where you pick up signals of flaws in your code that you'd never see otherwise.

My hope is that 10.3.2 will be a substantial update in terms of fixing GUI problems, networking bugs and the like. If they have to sit on it for an extra month to get it right, I hope they do that. A nice, 50MB update would be choice.

Heck, I can send you a 50MB update, Moogs... can't guarantee it'll fix anything, but it'll be 50MB...

    From rumortracker.com:

    Mac OS X 10.3.2 7D12 seeded

ADC Select and Premier members have been seeded a first build of Mac OS X 10.3.2. The update is said to contain changes in USB, Graphics drivers, networking, AFP server, WebDAV and international text. Other than 10.3.1, this update weighs in at about 15 MB. We'll keep you informed...

Um, call me crazy, but... rumortracker.com doesn't appear to have been updated since last July (of 2002 that is).

It actually goes (somehow) to a European site:

    MacNews.net.tc

    which goes to:

    http://macintosh.fryke.com/cgi-bin/m...cgi/index.html

There is also a post on Macrumors.com

If you understand how this works, you are a better man then I am.

its not exactly something you would do on your own, but how hard would it be for a malicious applescript to do the same?

I can explain, if you want. ;-) ... fryke.com is my private domain. I've started macintosh.fryke.com in 2000 or 2001 and accumulated some rumours. After a while, people started sending me mails. Some contained rumours that I didn't see on any other rumour sites. So I thought: Heck, why not have my own rumour site... Then I wanted a better domain for it. The .net.tc ones are free, you can set them to point to your own domain. I could set it to cloak the URL you're seeing in the browser, but didn't think it's that important.

While I admit it's not very likely, I can imagine someone trying to paste a file name into a save dialog, thinking they'd copied something much shorter, but accidently pasting a whole paragraph that they'd copied earlier instead. If the error went unnoticed.... boom!

This is one of those bugs that's not serious for the likelyhood of your stumbling into the bug, but for the scope of the bad consequences if you do. I'm sure the EQA guys where I work would flag this as a "P1" bug if they'd discovered it.
