I don't want to sound like a beggar and ask if anyone has a job available (in Phoenix, AZ) but I just wanted to see if you guys had any suggestions on finding a job.

I have found that the #1 way seems to be leveraging a friendship. The worst way has to be carpet-bombing your resume to listings at monster and other sites.

I have a contract at Intel that is ending on the 28th, so I really need to get my butt in gear. Any motivation or other suggestions would be appreciated too.

Most people get jobs from people they contact in person. When you are looking for a job you should tell everyone you meet that you are looking for a job.

My wife got her "current" job just because someone told her it would be posted in the Sunday paper.

Just today I was talking to someone who just got back from Chicago. He says, "I'd love to move there." I say, "there's tons of jobs there". He say, "you know I'd like this training position..." And I say, "We know Dr SoandSo who hires that position their. ..."

    What do you do?

Well, I was a systems admin before I moved to Phoenix. I did Novell and Windows administration and a lot of other things for a big company in Kansas City. Now I just do platform validation for I/O boards for Intel. I am 1 of about a billion contractors for Intel, and there aren't any openings I can find here. Besides, I want a full time position and am willing to change careers to achieve that.

The problem is, I don't know enough people here in Phoenix to really network efficiently. The people I do know tend to be blue collar workers, which just hasn't helped me in my current field.

Like I said, I know person to person contact is the best. I just wish I had some of that.

    Muah,

I would check with one of these One Stop centers. They should have people that can help you with finding employment but, and more importantly, provide you with a source for contacts. They should have individuals that deal with companies all day long, and a large list of contacts. Additionally, they should help you by vouching for you, when you apply for work.

Here are a couple of links to help you.

    Hope this helps.

Correct-a-mundo! It's cliche but the saying is true: it's not what you know, but who you know. And only sometimes what you know about who (especially if someone who has done bad and awful things is threatening your job).
