Anyone see this and figure it out. I was copying some ~5MB files to my idisk over cable modem. The copy is fast, say 10 second, but then it might take 5 MINUTES 'closing file' ????? anyone know what this is and what, if anything, can be done about this?

thanks,

Finder is strange with respect to this. The fast part is when it caches the file for file transfer, then when it 'closes' the file, it actually sends the file to your idisk. Run a network monitor and you'll see this more clearly.

Any idea then why the actual transfer during the 'closing' is so slow? downloading the file back is very very quick?

Perhaps your connection to apple's servers isn't that great. Again, use a net monitor to monitor network traffic while copying to your idisk.

    I just tried this myself

Activity monitor confirms that the file is actually transfered when it is "closing file"

I had no speed issues, i did the transfer from school and our internet connection is very fast. It uploaded at just under 500KBps

not much slower or faster than other transfers i do (HTTP, FTP, etc)

Thanks for all the input. You are indeed correct that the 'closing' is the actual transfer. I forgot about the asymetry of Cable connections with respect to transfer rates. I get about 180kbytes/sec down and only 30 kbytes/sec up, thus the longer upload vs download times.

Now, what's really frustrating is that during an upload you can't cancel. The stop button only seems to get acknowledged after the current file transfer is complete

Well, I too have seen this behavior. Not too cool. I wish Apple would update that code and have it "whisk" throught the files that are not changed and get to the actual sync-copy faster. I have alot on my iDisk, and it can take *forever* even if I only change a small text file. Can anyone explain that one?

the way that the finder copies to idisk is annoying. the progress meter should actually be an estimate of time rather than acting like 95% of the task is done in a matter of seconds, then waiting minutes for the last 5% of the progress bar to finish.
