Oddity Shutdowns

Depending on the model, try resetting the PMM button on the motherboard. That's the Power Management built into the motherboard.
On my iMac I had a problem where it was not connecting correctly, and would intermittently shut off (and then the energy saver control panel would restart it). I just had to really push the plug in hard to get it to go.
