Now next question.

If I want to limit the sites a user can visit on the internet on my iBook how do I do that (and can it be done?). Like if I want the user to be able to visit www.cnn.com but not www.foxnews.com

I want to make a positive list of "allowed" sites, either directly in the OS or via a hidden program.

Can it be done?

You could edit the hosts file, so that those domains lead to localhost or 0.0.0.0. Or if you are using Safari(and the person being limited isn't very computer-savvy), you could download Pithelmet, and add those sites to the Block list.

PithHelmet is a good idea, and I wonder if OSX doesn't allow a more robust way of doing this. PH stores its rules and logs in two files in ~/Library, although the application code is in /Library. Is there a way to re-direct PH to a rule list in /Library instead of ~/Library? Or just change the ownership of the list so the user can't modify it? That might work, just chown the rules to an admin...I wonder if that would choke Safari, though. Is there a general way to allow a user to use an app without being able to modify its preferences?

Thanks for the advise. I will look into them. But what you are suggesting, isn´t that a negative list of sites you can´t visit? I want to make the opposite, a list of places you can visit.

In PithHelmet, at least, you could set it to block * or *.com, and then list exempt sites. So the end result is a positive list of allowed sites.
