Still have 30% margin on towers
The new systems are right on par with what we should expect. The prices are fair (if you keep in mid Apple runs on 30% profit margin rather than 5~10% like PC makers). Check this out for comparison. I built a similar "virtual PC" out of the cheapest available components in Vancouver. The prices are a little odd as I have converted into USD$ from Canadian Pesos.
Dual athlon mb asus w/sound\t$252
Two Athlon 1800 xp\t$666

video (this is for GeForce 3 Ti) $200
modem \t$33
80 Gig Hd $172
Pinoeer DVD-RW\t$453
Fancy mouse and Keyboard $100
OS & Goodies\t$133
Total\t$2278
Apple's fat 30% profit margin\t$2961.4
Plus the cost of a firewire PCI card too I suppose puts us right at Apples price for the dual 1Ghz system.
Moto has said that it is shipping its 1Ghz chips for $295 US ea in lots of 1000 I believe so althought they may not keep up with Athlon 1800 they are about the same cost to the manufacturer and it is not realy fair to compare to anything cheaper as that is all apple has to work with.
All we can really complain about is Moto can't deliver faster chips for the price.
