Audio Clock Source

So I'm trying to get my G5 optical audio input to work with my MOTU 2408. I'm getting signal into the 2408 and the 2408 seems to be transmitting out. However, the 2408 needs to run on internal clock and my mac wont let me choose external clock. Every time I choose it it rejects it and reverts back to internal clock right away. Is it because it's not getting good clock from the 2408?
