claims are that they are quiet... but have some miscreants claiming its just Apple marketing and its all a load of bs.

Does anyone have any NUMBERS?

Lets say of a fully processor loaded Dual 2GHz (crunching lots of data) with fans full blasting. And then of a "normally" loaded Dual?

Single G5s?

    One way to cut through all the BS is to go down to an Apple store yourself and hear it yourself... ofcourse you will need to tell everybody to keep quiet and hold their breaths for a few minutes...

    I - have read that the G5s are indeed quieter. I think they were refering to a single 1.8.

    From personal experience my 1.6 is WAY quieter than my Pentium 3 1ghz, its a real pleasure. Also I do not hear any difference between my G5 doing hard work or just doing nothing. As a matter of fact the only noticeable noise coming from the G5 is the harddrive and the Super/ComboDrive noise.

    Hate to sound picky, but I'd like to note that it's not the noise level, it's the type of noise. The G5s are white noise. A dripping sink, while very "quiet", will annoy the hell out of you.

    Look in this video. I'm on dialup ight now, so I can't really look at it, but I know that it mentions the noise.

    The G5 is quieter than a G4 sawtooth. Since the G4s got louder as they progressed from sawtooth to MDD than that means the G5 is quieter than any G4. Sorry, I don't have numbers, but that is from personal experience.

    because my PC weenie friend is a Windows apologist and doesnt believe a single thing Apple says (benchmarks rigged, marketing is sham, etc etc) so, with something quantifiable such as noise, he wants actual NUMBERS rather than "its quiet".

    that basically sums it up.

    So, if I could have actual numbers, I can finally shut him the hell up on this front.

    (and, of course, he has an iPod... )

    The noise is both subjective and real, subjective because some sounds are more annoying that othes (the noise by a Bugatti motor, is far more entertaining than the one of a diesel), and real because you can mesure it.

    The DB scale is logarithmic thus 6 DB less is 4 time less noise.

    If your friend id a windows apologist he do not need any numbers.

    <ot>

    You've never heard anything till you've heard the raw power of a 650 hp Perice Aerial. (For those of you not in the fire service, that is a big fire truck with a 110' ladder on the top.) Oh man, is it ever sweet. Nothing, and I mean nothing, holds a candle to it.
