Another iPod mounting problem

I have a FP G4 iMac, running 10.2.8 and it works beautifully with my iPod, but only as a player. That is, it synchronises, charges through the firewire port perfectly.
But, I can't mount it as a Firewire drive for backups. I think I'm supposed to do it by selecting the iPod in iTunes, then checking the box 'use as firewire disk' under options. This I do, click OK, but nothing happens. On re-opening the dialog box the tick box is unchecked, as though I had never looked at it.
Any ideas?
