What do you think about the new 20" iMac?

I am still using the 500MHz Dual USB iBook. I upgraded it to Panther last month and found that it is generally acceptable performance-wise when it comes to web surfing, email, iTunes, iCal. However, it is not acceptable in iMovie for dropped frame or sluggish performance. I am also reluntant to start iPhoto as it loads very slow with close to 1000 photos in my case. Some new applications and hardward such as iSight also cannot be ran in my iBook due to slow CPU speed. Therefore, I am in need of a faster Mac!

I know G5 is great. My dream computer is Dual 1.8GHz G5 + 20" Cinema Display but that will cost almost US$3,800!! That is too expensive. I'm also wondering if I ever need such power in my usage. After all, I am not a professional artist nor DV guru. I reckon that I will mainly use it as my main computer and ocassionally editing my home video with Final Cut Express; making presentation files with Keynote; and some database development with FileMaker Pro. I do use MS Office as well.

I didn't consider 17" iMac 'cos I want a 20" display. So what do you think about the 20" iMac? I felt combining a 20" display and an Mac have the best value. I know I am buying an old generation CPU and the price/performance ratio of G5 is much higher than G4 as it stands right now. However, I'm going to be a father next year as our first baby is "coming out", so money would be tight and I don't think computer would be the top priority by then.

What I am hesitating now is how big performance increase would be from G3 to G4? I hope my new computer can be useable (of course per my usage) in 3 years before obsolete (something that cannot be run in the computer anymore. Final Cut is the perfect example happen to G3).

Here's a nice 4-page flamefest on the subject.

I think it looks funny, having that huge 20" on that "now" small base. (It use to look so large on the 15" model.

I just picked up my 20" iMac yesterday, and I couldn't be happier. To me, the 20" screen is the only one that actually looks in proportion to the base. Right now, it has found its home on my 3rd floor office desk, which has a built-in hutch (standard sized hutch). The iMac screen pretty much fills the space alloted for a computer, and I can see about 2/3 of the base beneath it. The 1.25G G4 seems plenty fast for everything that I'm running, and combined with the video card, it's a large step up in screen draw speed from my G4 800. The little clear Apple speakers don't sound half bad, either. I think this machinr is great, and does exactly what it's supposed to do - provide a small footprint computer with a huge beautiful screen that is easy to set up and use, has more than enough power to run most "regular" programs without even breathing hard, and make the whole computer experience very friendly to deal with.

I also LOVE the fact that I don't have cables running all over the place under my desk (more legroom for me), and that I don't have to try to find a space to put the tower. As with everything, some will love it, some will hate it. I happen to be a very satisfied example of the former type.
