A Decade of Hell: DOOM Turns 10

Tomorrow.

I love DOOM.

If you like games, you have to like DOOM. If you don't like DOOM, then I have to wonder how anyone wouldn't like cutting up zombies with a chainsaw. Or not enjoy getting seriously freaked out the first time you heard a Mancubus. Or hyperventilating after rounding a corner and coming face to face with a Cyberdemon. Or firing a double barreled shotgun...just for the sound of it.

For me there were two revolutions in gaming. First was the Atari 2600. That was the beginning. ColecoVision, NES, Genesis, they were all simple 2600's with better graphics. The Atari was the foundation for gaming though, for nearly two decades.

The next revolution was DOOM. Nothing has come close since. DOOM really re-taught your brain how to interact with a screen, like the Atari did for those first generations years ago.

Happy Birthday DOOM!

Is there a place I can download the original? The macupdate page's link is dead.

I remember going to my friends house and playing DOOM.

It got me addicted to gaming.

I play UT all the time ( we just got crushed in a match tonight. )

Anyway, I had never touched a PC before and there were times when we couldn't figure out how to run the game so we would sit around and wait until the roommate would come home and open it up for us.

I think it was Windows 3.1 or something and man was it clunky.

I love doom. I have the original, doom II, and the ultimate doom, all on CD that I bought from CompUSA for $5 USD each. I never tire of them. Long live the best FPS game ever!

It's always fun when we talk about the extremists in politics, especially considering the extremists on the right are such nice people!

How could anybody want to ban this? Meh... Either way, Doom rules, I just picked it up for Super Nintendo a couple of months ago. Best 3 dollars I ever spent.

The extremists to the left and right are two sides of the same coin. Both are interested in taking away the rights of the American public "for their own good."

You shouldn't forget that the extremists on the right in America blow up federal buildings, drag black men behind trucks, occasionally pull a sherriff out of his car and execute him for trespassing, and keep WMD like sodium cyanide bombs.

Some, like the ones in Idaho making waves right now, like to wear white sheets at night.

And extremists on the left burn down houses that are under construction and vandalize SUVs and throw paint at people who wear fur. They also start riots against the WTO leading to all sorts of injuries and deaths.

What's your point? Is it "my extremists are better than your extremists?" If that's what you are trying to get at, sell your bullshit somewhere else.

Oh yeah, that's awful. Just awful. Blowing up the Murrah Federal Building pales in comparison.

You're the one who started pointing out the evil lefty extremists who want to ban videogames like Doom. I was making the point that I never understand why conservatives point to left-wing extremists as if they don't have any who are far worse and far more dangerous in their own backyards.

Did you see him repressing me? Did you see him repressing me? Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Come and see the violence inherent in the system.

But to respond more pointedly: no. I won't "sell" it elsewhere. I'll stay right here, thankyouverymuch.

    I'm not a conservative.

I just found it interesting that Bunge, being the crazy lefty he is, doesn't want to see games like DOOM banned.

I picked up the OS X version a couple months ago and played it, but I couldn't play more than just through the demo levels. Are there more levels that you can download?

Why is it odd that not all lefties think alike? Not all Republicans are in the KKK. Not all liberals and lefties want to ban violent entertainment.

Uh, does anyone outside of BR's paranoid delusions want to ban video games?

I'm pissed that the 'bouncing car' was taken out of GTA: Vice City.

I'm not happy that movies get a rating system that actually keeps theaters from showing a film.

I don't like the idea of cleaning up Hollywood.

I don't believe that any one word is worse than another.

One of the greatest moments in video game history was in a strange game called Tecmo's Deception. It was a little movie at the end of a scene, after you the player had killed the parents of a little girl because the parents were trying to steal your gold to pay for their daughter's life saving surgery. The little end level movie was of the girl in her bedroom asking "Mommy? Daddy? Where are you?" It was pure genius evil goodness.

DOOM is a pinnacle of our society.

Id opened the source, and made it free (I think) a couple of years back. Here are a couple of versions (note, they may require compiling): free doom, doom legacy.
