Need suggestion for new computer
Hello folks.
I'm totally Mac addicted, and I'm not interested in the PC's. Here's what I currently have (sorry for the bad English) :
10 years old Mac IIci, 32 MB RAM, 500MB HD, Daystar 040 accelerator at 50 MHz. MacOS system 7.1 and some Radius video card.
This computer is fast (really) for scientific word processing, few Mathematica calculations, some spreadsheets and some drawing. It's the only computer I owned since 10 years and it's working perfectly, AFTER 10 YEARS !!!
For most of the work stuff I really need to do, this computer should be enough for a long time yet. I'm also using some old iMacs at work and I totally hate iMacs.
I feel the urgent needs to buy a new computer. Mostly for accessing the internet, to play some games (Quake, Oni, etc), and to do serious Mathematica stuff. I also want to do some 3D arts, just for the fun of it.
So I'm seriously looking for a new Mac but I don't know what to choose. Money isn't a real problem. I'm interested in the Dual 1GHz with the 17" LCD screen from Apple, but I'm puzzled with all the G5 rumors. I can wait two months, but it's really hard to resist now.
I'm new to MacOS X and I can't wait to have it at home. I read a lot about it. I hate system 8 and 9, which I'm using at work on some iMacs. Because of all the bug reports and complains, I'll wait to version 10.2 at least.
What are your suggestions ?
Should I wait for MacOS 10.2 and buy the dual 1GHz, or wait longer until the G5 comes out?

Seriously, you can't hold off forever especially with Apple hardware. You never can predict when their new machine will be released. Hope this helps.

If you can't wait 2 months, and can afford it, I'd jump all over that dual 1ghz. You're not going to get a G5 in 2 months, and that dual 1ghz is a smokin' machine.
I'd only wait for a certain type of machine if A) you already have something pretty fast to begin with and the wait won't be long. Nobody knows how long the G5 will be. Some people think July, others think 2003. You can ALWAYS get a faster machine by waiting -- what's true today was true six months ago and will still be true when the next G4s or the first G5s come out.
If you'd like to upgrade now, go for it. A dualie 1Ghz will still be a screaming machine in a year (especially for all that you want to do with it).
When 10.2 comes out, you can pay the (probably minimal) upgrade fee to get it if you buy now. On the other hand, you've had your old Mac for 10 years. What's a few more months to wait for 10.2 right?
I guess I'm saying: Let your needs now dictate what you buy now or wait for. When you buy, get the most for what you can afford, and it'll last you longer in the future.
For me personally, if I had the money RIGHT NOW to drop on a dualie 1Ghz, I'd rush to the Apple Store in a heartbeat. Yeah, the G5 will be coming out sometime, but damn, I need a faster machine now. A dualie 1Ghz would definitely be an improvement over my Pismo 400 G3, especially with multi-threading in FCP 3.
Well I would buy an iMac to keep me going if I were in your position and wait for the G5. Knowing how long it was for the LCD iMac to appear (Long after the rumors) it could be another year. But it is going to be a shift to light speed when it finallly arrives. We will by that time have a better optomised OS as well. The G5 wil be the SGI killer.
NEVER buy a mac right before macworld.
if you can wait, i would wait. with 10.2 around the corner and at least the potential for more speedbumps, it's worth the time. i'd want the new mobo architecture even without a G5. 800mbps firewire and a bigger system bus would definitely let you go another 10 years. who knows? you might even get the chance at a 19'' flatscreen....
Forgive me for saying this, but judging by the contradictions in Kali's writing style, message content and profile, I think this is a bogus thread - probably a forum regular looking for some attention.

Well if that's true, it's probably Macintosh.

What the ????
What contradictions ? English isn't my native langage, sorry about this. My question was a serious one, and no, I'm not Macintosh (what a silly and confusing name for a person, anyway).
I just learned on another thread that the GForce4 Titanium video card will soon be an order to option at Apple, that's great.
Can you ppl say when (approximately) when OS 10.2 will be out ? Two months ? 6 Months ? Just an magnitude ordre please.
And what will be the changes ?
I think 10.1 is great, why not just use 10.1?

Because it's too young. I heard many bug reports and complains about it. And it lacks some features, apparently.
Personnaly, I found the contextual menu (when you control-click on something) to be almost useless. It's lacking something there.
But what should we expect in 10.2 ?

Some more speed and spring loaded folders. Everything else 10.1 seems to have (am I missing something?)
10.1.2 is a lot better than whatever OS you're running now.

Pointing fingers are we?
thinksecret says summer for 10.2
10.1.3 will probably be soon.....
others here are right that if you need a new computer you shouldn't play the wait game...the dual 1 gig is a bitchin machine and will be great for many years of work.....
but if you are in no hurry and want to wait for 10.2.....then probably will be waiting till summer...and maybe G5 will be around then (probably not though.....will be 1.2 and maybe 1.4 duals by then though)...g
