G5 users- Firmware update

There is a firmware update in the software update control panel. I installed it and noticed the fans run a little faster. That is good since I think my G5 was running a little hot before.

Anyone have any other opinions?

Ebby

EDIT- Still doesn't fix my problem with the lower 2 fans not turning on when you open the plastic side.

Yeah the fans are turning a bit quicker

and now my G5 is noiser due to faster spinning of the fans....but still much quieter than the SlowSilver? which was like a hair dryer

Do you know what fans are fasters. I have heard that some G5 encountered heat problems when they have 2 HD.

Perhaps the firmware update fix this issue.

The HD fans are slightly faster

The upper CPU fan is MUCH faster, lower CPU fan is around the same (Remember I run a dualie )

The PCI slot fan is slightly faster

Did seem to crank up the speed on the upper CPU.

Remember, I have a dual too.

I'm waiting 'til I get home to apply my firmware update. Other than the increased RPMs, sounds like the update is working without a hitch.

I'll check back before applying it though.

do they run faster no matter what? i leave my window open in my office to keep things cool, so they don't really need to run that fast.

Has anyone tried putting their G5 into Target FireWire Disk mode after the update? Before (and maybe still now) there was no software control over the fans in that mode. They all ran at full power -- quite an amazingly loud "who brought a jet engine into my room" noise.

    I'll try. Just for fun.

EDIT: Well, I've been in firewire disk mode for about 10 minutes now. The fans have not "Taken off". Seems to be fixed. Now I can't show off to my friends anymore. I guess I have to beat them in UT2K3 at 100FPS to prove my point now. 8)

Everything is working so far so good. I haven't noticed any fan speed changes. More observations later.

Here are my observations on the firmware update.

    1) Fan noise is definitely quiter now. They are now running at a regular consistant speed. There were times when my fans ran hard and were noisy before I applied the firmware update.

    2) My G5 feels and seems to be a tad quicker than before the update.

    3) Boy oh boy there was many repaired permissions taken care of after using disk utility.

    So far no problems..............
