Buying advice: monitor

I need a monitor for my PowerMac G4. Right now I'm using a horrible 15" FuzzyVision CRT. I'd like to get something a lot better - either a 17" Diamondtron CRT, or an affordable LCD. The problem is I would love the compactness of an LCD but the 15" ones are too small and the 17" ones are too expensive. So I guess I'm going with a 17" CRT... anyone have recommendations? I have a Radeon with a VGA port and a DVI port, so no ADC monitors. I'm looking to spend maybe $200, but not more.

In actuality, a 17" CRT has the same viewing area as a 15" LCD screen. The reasoning is, 17 inches is from edge to edge, not the screen, the screen is curved, so it has less viewing area.

I'm going to out of a limb and say he knew that.

I've used a ViewSonic E90f 19" CRT and been really happy with it. They're $219, and the 17" model is $129. Those are NewEgg prices (you really should check that site out, Luca!)

I had a Mitsu Diamondtron, very nice monitor. I wouldnt hesitate to get another Mitsu CRT ( if I was going to get a CRT ). It had dual inputs and other niceties, and was cheap, at the time. I also like the LG flat CRT's, but the Mitsu was cheaper.

However, I would strongly recomment getting an LCD. I would prefer a 15" LCD to a 17" CRT. I find that running most 17" CRT's above 1152x864 isnt much of a win ( more info - less legibility ), so while its a bit higher res than an LCD, its not a lot. Ive found my iBook's 1024x768 to be quite bearable.

For my money, a second hand, original series Apple Studio Display ( LCD ) seems worthwhile. Get one of the analog ones. They arent hot for playing games, but they are nice.

I have a NEC 750 CRT, very nice, but I wouldn't buy another one. Stretch for a 17" LCD, even a good analogue one, if you can't get a digital or dual mode. Your eyes will thank you.

Sorry but there's no way I can stretch for a 17" LCD unless I wait until 17" LCDs cost under $300. They don't.

By the way I know that 15" LCDs have the same viewable area as a 17" CRT, more or less. But what matters is the resolution (just like with 12" vs. 14" iBooks, which have the same resolution but different screen sizes). I like to run a 17" CRT at 1152x864 or 1280x1024 - despite what many people say to the contrary, I find 17" CRTs run at those resolutions fine. But I do really like LCDs. I was also thinking of modifying one of those adjustable lamp arms to attach an LCD monitor to it, and use it like an iMac LCD. That would be pretty cool.
