I got a few WMV files from a friend and they don't play....when I double click it sends me to a web site that my player needs to be compatible with M7 and cannot play the file. What does this all mean? this is the actual URl

http://windowsmedia.com/wmrm/wmrm.asp

thats where it sends me, idk what to do with it.

You have windows media player 9 installed? If so, then I think there's some stupid DRM preventing you from using the media files.

no. the digital rights management (read: crippleware) embedded in the file will keep you from playing it on anything other than WMPlayer 9 for windows.

e-mail the person and complain. this stupid DRM stuff will be the end of the internet as we know it at this rate.

Basically, yes. Any file created with this DRM requires you to get a 'specialized key' through Microsoft to play it back if you didn't create the file. And, surprise-surprise, that feature is only supported in Windows. :P
