Can I get another one from Apple?

Is this covered under my 1 year Apple iBook warranty?

I need a function key

Take your iBook with you o the closest Apple Store.

If there is a spare keyboard, you will get a key. (Ask the genius).

Also, in case you'll find a spare key from another iBook - even those clamshell keyboards wll work. They have only different opacity.

Apple Store (geniuses) should be able to hel you.

A Store will have them? Anyone know if the NH store would? My 9 key on my PB 12" comes off sometimes, ever since it came off when I vacuumed it too much.

I am not even close to a Apple Store. Any ideas?

    Is this a warranty issue?

Which model is this? If it's an older one with a removable keyboard, you're screwed: keyboard replacement ($100+) is the only solution you'll find at an Apple repair center.

If it's one of the newer ones where the keys are removable... eh. I dunno. It's not a warranty issue, and I doubt any retailer will have the keys just lying around. I'm sure they can order them, but it may not be cost-effective, so they'll balk.

This came up with the little rubber feet on the 12", which have a habit of falling off. Customer came in needing two for his PB. Our tech (I worked at a reseller then), looked it up: he could only get them in bulk packs of 100 for somewhere around $30 or something. Rediculous cost, and the store wasn't willing to pay it. Customer would've had to buy the whole pack, just for his two he needed.

Try locating the Apple repair depot nearest you and then just go visit them. I wanted to replace a few keys on my Pismo. The tech there just fished around in his junk drawer and gave me dead keyboard from another Pismo. It was easy for me to get the keys I needed from that one. There is definitely an element of luck involved here.

You'll get a new keyboard under warranty, call Apple up. I had a TiBook lose a key during the one year warranty and they replaced it, no questions asked.

It just so happens that I have a spare brand new keyboard for a dual USB 'Icebook' laying around somewhere. It will work (I believe) on all 12" ibooks that were all white, pre G4.

While I suppose that I could get some cash for it on ebay, I am just too darn lazy, and not materialistic enough to do so. Thus, if apple are unable/unwilling to help you, I will give it to you for free if you are willing to cover the cost of shipping.

    Let me know at robinc@mac.com

You could take bids for the different keys, and sell them individually...
