Does SBC suck as bad as their website?
I was going to sign up for SBC/Yahoo! DSL. However, their website lists requirements as a G3 or G4 and 10.1.1-10.2.x. I figure they are just out of date but I thought I would ask just in case. As far as I can see their website is designed to prevent people from finding information. Things like they claim to have support forums, but when you try to get there you just get a form to submit your questions. I couldn't see how to get to an actual forum where someone might already have asked about G5s and Panther. So then I try to submit a question and it requires that you put in your phone number. In one place it requires that your phone number be formatted like 123-4567 and in another it requires 1234567. These people are running a web service and they can't even build a website. This makes me nervous about whether they will actually provide decent service and whether I will be able to get any help from them if they don't. What kind of experience do people have with them?

I was thinking of switching to SBC because of all the hassles with Comcast.
They sent out an email a week or so back that said they were increasing our bandwidth to 4mbs down and 384? up. SInce then I only get 1.5,6,7 down and 118 or so up, and that is way below what I was getting for download before the supposed increase. I'll bet they are getting ready to jack up the price "big time" and claim that the increased bandwidth is what justifies it.
I've aid enough, need to calm down... and remember it's
New Years Day.....Randy
There was one significant outage of a good 12 hours, but that has been it. It didn't matter though as I was able to sluff off the neighbors airport network, who I guess must have comcast.
I'm currently stealing my cable from comcast so switching isn't really an option for me!

I've been using SBC in Kansas City since DSL was available in my area (4 years?), aside from annoyances when moving its been a solid service for me.
We also got DSL when it was first being introduced, and it took them FOREVER to figure out whatever problem we were having with getting it turned on. I literally spent hours and hours for a couple of weeks on the phone with tech support until some guy went, "Oh, I see what the problem is." Once it finally got turned on, it's been great.

Yeah, it's pretty good, I use SBC. Actually the Yahoo perks are pretty nice, and I haven't had any trouble with connection speed going up or down. Just an out of date website... (I use panther)
It looks like it is more than an out of date website. I just got a call from SBC responding to the query I placed on their website. They claim the service is NOT compatible with panther! That makes me a little nervous. Why are they claiming that it doesn't work if there is not some sort of problem. On the other hand if people here have it working, I suppose they can just be incompetent.
Really.
Stellar support like I've never seen, positively transparent service for the user (place an order, and you don't get a silly 'working on it!' or even a 'you're on stage 3 of 7!' indicator... you get full access to the tech logs of speakeasy *AND* your installer, *AND* your phone company... you can see exactly who's holding it up where), *ZERO* filtering of your ports or services, good price, and... they support MacOS X. Not somewhat, not grudgingly... gleefully.
