Strange problems with MacOS X

Am having some strange problems with Panther.

Firstly: When I'm in the finder, I double click on a folder and it opens a blank window with the loading indicator on. This doesn't go away - the files never appear. Then when I close the window and open the same folder a second time, it works fine. This has only started happening today. I've tried restarting, but it didn't help.

Disk images are causing problems too. I've tried to open some many times. Sometimes they don't open at all. Sometimes they pop up the "mounting" window but never display. The last one I tried mounted (and opened a window which, when I closed and reopened it, displayed the contents), but didn't appear in the sidebar. Then, when I tried to drag it into the sidebar, it suddenly appeared and so did a few I'd tried to mount before. (Some of them still didn't appear though).

Some programs also aren't loading properly. They load and instantly quit. Only a few programs (eg Toast, which may be related to my disk image problem) do this.

I don't know what's wrong. The last thing I did was plug the laptop into Manchester University's network, to copy some files from a friend's computer. It worked fine then. When I returned home, all these crazy problems showed up. Restart didn't help. Any ideas?

try to fsck, that fixes some problems. Repair permissions, if those don't work, you'll have to i guess reformat and reinstall the OS. What os do you have. Panther?

    Panther, yes.

Can I fsck when I'm logged in? I tried it and it didn't appear to do anything (but no error messages either).

Re repair permissions - I was under the impression that it was a placebo akin to Rebuild Desktop under OS9. But I guess trying it can't hurt.
