Tech TV Host Goes For New iMac In A Big Way

Posted:
in Current Mac Hardware edited January 2014
Chris Pirillo on his show "Call For Help" at 5 PM on 2/20 went bananas over the new iMac. Show will be repeated at 3 AM 2/21 ET. Said he's getting one and likes OS X (prettier then XP) and he dissed the movie editing app from Microsoft (finger in mouth gagging) and praised iMovie and the other apps. Brent Larson was with him as well giving details. Here's Bren'ts review of the iMac:

Weak video card?! what the hell is that nitwit talking about. GeF2mx is a freaking monster compared to the Rage 128 crap we've put up with the last couple years.

What does he expect, a GeF4 ti? the man is obviously talking out of his ass.

Easy on Brett, he's an absoulte Mac disciple. A sometimes annoyingly foppish disciple, given, but still, one of my first impressions of the iMac was, "everything I could want, except the vid card."

    Pirillo being won over is actually pretty big news. He's maybe the biggest PC/Linux guru I've ever heard of considering the switch. It would make my Iwegian heart proud to see our beloved Gnome <a href="http://lockergnome.com"; target="_blank">http://lockergnome.com</a>;

    come over from the darkside.

    Jeff

Edit: Changed a word in case Techtv's voice of Mac reason happens to breeze by here. (Hey, you never know...)

And anyway, AI's about the love now!

considering geforce 4 mx starts at like 129 retail I don't think it is out of question to be upset about a 1799 computer having a graphic chip from 2 years ago when current generation chips are cheap.

wouldn't be that bad if it was upgradable but it isn't.

    an improvement? yes

    is it great? no

You mean you don't think it's upgradable.

You forget one thing. Brett, Chris, Leo and all the rest work with Patric Norton. He probaly already has one in about 100 orginized pieces, and is planning to upgrade that Video Card first thing in the morning.

    [edit] Darth Dvorak. lol

if he can more power to him. I'm sure the mac community and especially apple would be extremely interested if he succeeded considering the chip is soldered and integrated into the motherboard

Apple had to release something at Macworld SF. The GeForce4 MX wasn't ready by then. If Apple had put a GeForce4 MX in the current iMac, there would be a greater delay and less hoopla when Jobs announces an update to the machine sometime this summer or fall.

Of course if you'e not a gamer, in other words use your computer mostly for productivity rather then play, the video card is probably just fine. That's why they have things called game consoles!

The iMac GeF2mx is a GeF2mx Ti-400. So at least, it is the latest GeF2mx, and I think that's pretty damn good coming from Apple - considering the ass draggin Apple pulled with the Rage 128.

BTW, Pirillo actually bought one or he was just yapping about how he might buy one?

Pirillo said he was going to buy one and Larsen mentioned to him that there was a month delay on the high-end model.

I actually think that this is HUGE for Apple. Pirillo knows almost nothing about macs (he even referred to Airport as 'Aircard' or something). Anyway, when he inevitably starts raving about how cool the mac is and OS X, he'll get some newbies calling in asking how to install OS X on their pc's , but then he'll tell them to consider buying a mac. It's all good, even despite the 'weak' video card.

sigh... I can't stand this comment. so many people use it and it is just so annoying.

why do we have to settle for something just fine. why should gaming performance not be considered. and its not just games that use OpenGL my friend.

I don't see why spending 1799 instead of the base 1299 doesnot get you a better graphic chip.

BTW, it's still a great all around computer and we are bitching about something that isn't all that bad its just that based on the past, the graphic chip that ships with the major iMac revision is likely to be the chip for its life

nor is the gf4 Ti shipping, there were plenty of other chipsets they could have used- as applenut stated.

I just watched the Call for Help iMac part. It was great. Very positive. They really did a great job of explaining everything.
