Hidden In-Joke

I was checking out the html code on the new iLife pages to see how the transition to web standards was going and found this:

Code:

<p class="sosumi">Copyright &copy; 2004 Apple Computer, Inc. All rights reserved.</p>

I'm not sure how new it is, but it's a nice touch anyways.

Right. The sosumi sound was introduced after Apple Computers was sued (again) by Apple Records, because the Macintosh had music production capabilities and, for the time, a top-notch digital sound chip. Apple Records said this constituted an infringement of their prior agreement.

After that lawsuit was settled, Apple Computer included the sosumi sound in System 7 as a definite tweak in the record company's direction.

This is just keeping the tradition alive, by using that name for the CSS style for the copyright notice.

Well, the sound was named that as a joke because Apple records made Apple agree that their computers could not have sounds, part of the agreement of having the same name.

Edit; I guess that's why you're the really fast typing moderator. You beat me.

sosumi is a sound they stuck in the sound menu when apple records threatened to sue apple computers for adding sound to the computer, or so legend goes.

    That's a great find!

I'm just reading Eric Meyer's book "On CSS" and planning a brand new version of my website. I think that I shall have some fun naming my classes!!!

I thought it was because the guy originally wanted to make that sound like a guitar chord, but the resulting sound (the "sosumi" sound that still remains in the Mac OS) sounds nothing like it.

Nope, the three (almost) identical stories from above are correct.

Although, I could have sworn that sound was here pre system 7...maybe I've been using Macs too long.
