Hey now, are we dull beige boxes like the paleolithic PC-users or are we creative spirits who just happen to use the best darned platform available at this point in time in our planet's history?
I happen to think that AppleOutsider is So Much More than just a "computer site".
As far as where the link happens I couldn't care less. Just give me AppleOutsider, or "Culture Club" or whatever you want to call it.
This is what this is about. It's people who don't like politics - isn't it about 90% of people, Americans at least - saying they don't want to see those threads. I've got an idea. Don't click on them. If there's too many, close the redundant ones, just like you'd do in any forum.

And fewer and fewer people - especially those with moderate political views - even bother to vote. That leaves the field open for the far right (or far left, I suppose, if it ever came to that) who do seem to mobilize their people to go to the polls.
We could start to discuss all of that here, I suppose, but that might be seen as political...and I certainly don't want to offend anyone.
I voted no...The non-political threads feed off the interest in the political threads, and the non-political ones serve as a counterpoint or cooler for the politics. The political forum would be even more extreme -- hard to imagine but true -- and would become just plain nasty like FC was without checks in place.
No...the political threads serve to drive away those to love to participate in discussion that doesn't make you want to kill people. The Clinically Elite know what I'm talking about...I loved AO when Fireside Chat was around.

The sub-forum doesn't need to do anything for the political threads. In fact, I would like to see less of them.

Politics in a democracy is an alternative to killing people to decide matters. A matter of interest for everyone, surely.
Of course, as Doonesbury once observed, it is perhaps a good thing that the apolitical vote can't be harnessed, otherwise the next President could be Sonny Bono. That was before Sonny was actually elected, of course, and before he skied into a tree. And now we have Arnold as Governor in California, thanks in part to the first-time votes of those who otherwise would never do it (on the basis of liking his Terminator films), so perhaps it is better for everyone to go to sleep.

I think PowerDoc, alcimedes, Moogs, Buonrotto, Fellowship would be good political mods. They all do political threads but are usually quite flame-retardant.
And bring thegelding in as AO mod! Maybe you could even convince pscates to come back to AO if he had thread-locking powers.
I'm wondering about Chinney's question though - what would be the contents of the forum? Just election politics? That's probably not enough. Fireside Chat topics - religion, war, politics, anything that invokes lots of debate? You could call it the Debate Club.

You know, it's really too bad you can't purchase replacement sarcasm and humor sensors over the internet. Looks like an expensive trip to a specialty clinic is in line for you.

The first rule of Debate Club is - you do not talk about Debate Club. The second rule of Debate Club is - you DO NOT talk about Debate Club. Third rule of Debate Club, someone's posts goes limp, taps out, the Debate is over.

I love this thread. There is nothing more political than debating the parameters of debate.

AppleOUTSIDER is for everything NOT computer-related.
and I agree... AO is a great forum and shouldn't go anywhere for precisely that reason...
but I see no reason to put a new forum on the front page that is for political threads... IMnsHO they (political threads) are hardly creative...
