GarageBand forum?

Just based on the excitement and anticipation building around GarageBand (everyone's dusting off their guitars and keyboards, signing up for lessons, etc.), I was thinking that there's likely to be quite a surge in people tinkering with this new iApp.

Do you think it might be a neat, useful idea to maybe have a dedicated forum that consists strictly of posts with links to the creations of others?

I know its an iApp and technically belongs in Digital Hub (and I believe simple discussion, praise, complaints, etc. about it should remain in Digital Hub), but would it be easier to track, check out and stay current on the efforts of others if there was an added forum just for that purpose?

It's just a thought...I don't really care, either way. I just think it would be 100x easier to look at a thread started by, say, Wrong Robot or amorph or whoever and know that within THAT thread I'm going to find links to THEIR music, with more stuff added as the thread progresses and more songs are created in GarageBand?

Might be a bit premature even asking, I realize. But I could sure see Digital Hub getting really cluttered and crowded with tons of "hey, check out my latest..." threads in the coming months.

In fact, here's a neat, easy-to-follow way to do it (pretend, for a moment, a separate GarageBand forum does exist): A member makes an initial post there, alerting others to his track(s). Discussion and whatnot ensues, WITHIN THAT ONE THREAD. As new songs are added by that member, he'll return to THAT THREAD to post the link, talk about the track, etc. and discussion will continue on as usual.

In other words, it'll pretty much be: one member/one thread. That one thread contains running discussion/updates from and about that member. I'd have a pscates thread, Wrong Robot would have one, BRussell would have his, etc. Whoever was interested in sharing their GarageBand creations.

The very first post in that thread could also list the instruments played, musical interests, the member's musical background, any interesting info, etc. so that everyone could get a quick, "top of the thread" overview as to what type of music that thread is likely to contain throughout its run.

Then you'd just go to GarageBand forum, look for the member's name you were interested in, click on that thread and know that every link you see within is all that member's music. Back out of it and go to another member's thread for more music.

I just think this is going to be a HUGE and popular app and people are, naturally, going to want to share and discuss their SONGS, as opposed to GarageBand, the app (that discussion would stay in Digital Hub)

I'm all for putting them in one dedicated forum, where each participating member has ONE THREAD and one thread only.

AND, I'd even be happy to moderate it and ensure it's kept clean and tight and that the "one ongoing thread per member" model is adhered to.

I wouldn't even ask for - or want - moderator abilities anywhere else at AI. I'd just be happy to be janitor for the Garage! I know "asking to be a mod" is a sure-fire way to never be one, but I'm simply volunteering my services in case none of the others wanted to. I didn't want "our mods are stretched thin already" to be any kind of reason or deal-killer. Personally, I don't give two damns if I'm ever a mod or not. This is the only forum I'd even consider being one in anyway, so...

Otherwise, one of our fine current, music-loving mods could oversee it.

And we could call the forum simply, The Garage. Everyone will get it.

You totally know the answer coming, sir

As soon as discussion warrants it, we would be more than happy to add a GarageBand forum. Perhaps if this were a music oriented site, we would add the forum in the advance, but until there are an overwhelming amount of threads that demand their own forum, we won't add it.

maybe as a subforum to DH? heh

you know... we never really had an "iMovie" forum... and based on "Macintosh" and his lovely works of art... are you SURE this is a good idea? there is going to be a lot of crap with the good stuff...

well maybe if it is 1 thread per member...

how would you handle discussion? I mean... whats the point of having a thread that only one person posted to? Why don't you just keep a blog and link to that?

A "Creations" forum might be good. It could contain links/works from AI users for everything from web sites to print publishing to GarageBand. Features and functionality of iLife, iPod, etc. could still be discussed in DH, but criticism and analysis of what's been created with those items could be in "Creations."

No, you misunderstood: EVERYONE could take part in discussion in that person's thread...just like any other. I'm just saying keep it to one thread per member, with their creations. An ongoing BRussell thread, for example, with him providing links and updates to his newest track or whatever, with people posting and responding, like a normal thread.

There just wouldn't be 19 threads by BRussell, all strewn about, every time he released a new song or track.

    Is that clearer?

And anyway, Paul, one man's "crap" is another's sterling masterpiece. I think it's probably easier to be an idiot with iMovie and go off the rails. These are just loops and recordings and songs. I doubt we're going to be inundated with people recording their farts or otherwise acting like a dipshit. Or being the aural equivalent to Macintosh.

    I'm an optimist, I suppose...

Besides, iMovie and iDVD are essentially useless without a digital camcorder. Same with iPhoto and a digital camera. Not everyone owns these potentially-expensive devices. Plus, not everyone has an interest in seeing the kids of total strangers on vacation or in a school play, so that's probably why - not counting Macintosh's forays into the cinematic arts - there was never a call for it.

But it's relatively cheap to get into GarageBand: many people already have keyboards and those that don't, it's a $99 purchase. Or you can create, right out of the box, with just manipulating loops. So that's a big difference (and benefit) GarageBand has over the other creation-oriented iApps. I've had a SuperDrive and iDVD for over two years and have never used it because I don't have a digital camera or camcorder to even MAKE something I'd want to put on a DVD!

And music, I believe, is inherently something to be shared, played, listened to by others than just the person who created it. That's why I think a GarageBand forum, with members sharing music and discussing it, would be quite a hopping place, compared to any iMovie or iPhoto-oriented forums.

If someone is shown to be abusing the place by posting links to looping belches or piecing together unlistenable crap on purpose, just to be a wise-ass, then he'd be dealt with just like any other pain-in-the-balls that inhabits these boards: reprimanded, ostracized and ultimately banned. Easy as that.

Really easy to weed out the idiots and the people not acting right.

Yeah, LoCash...I know. That's why I qualified my post with "it may be a bit premature to ask...".

But I think I'll be proven right in the coming months, so I was just getting out in front a bit early and clearing a path.

Basically, we'll watch for people posting creations all over the place, and if we see that we'll make a dedicated forum for them. Right now it seems to be confined to a couple of e.g. "Post your desktop" threads, and the very occasional mockup in FH.

We don't create forums in anticipation of content, as a matter of policy.

Yeah, those Mockups in FH are very very rare... saddening even...

    Thanks, amorph. That's cool.

Minor clarification: I wasn't necessarily saying "do it right now" as much as "at some point, I bet it's going to be an ungodly mess in Digital Hub...I have an idea to address that!"

Would be kinda lame to make a Garage forum tonight and have it sit empty for another week or so.

I probably should've made that clearer.

We'll just have to see what kind of activity and response GarageBand brings about.
