Hey guys I just need some buying advice. I want to buy Panther but I have no funds right now. I was gonna buy it with the educational discount but I no longer attend school. I want to buy it from here

seems OK no manuals or anything I don't think I need that I just need the full OS. What do you guys think I don't mean to be cheap but sometimes you just need to go for the deal. Do you guys recomend buying from there. I don't wanna get ripped off. It looks like a good deal.

    what hardware are you running?

I would suggest waiting until a 10.3.2 or higher instal CD is released...

even if you are no longer a student I'm sure you know someone who is, have them order panther for you... it is a really big savings...

Well on a 800 Mhz G4 iMac(superdrive) and it seems that website is selling the upgrade I though there was no upgrade but that what it says. I think I need Jaguar in order to get that upgrade. As for the educational discount how does it work. Some high schools a eligable, so parents that order for there kids use there own credit card and kids student ID right, can you do that?

You don't need jaguar to use the panther upgrade discs. I think you can have 10.0 or higher (maybe even OS 9...clarify anyone??)

I would guess you could call apple and just say you are a student and they will give you the discount. I have never had to verify my student standing, and i have probably received the education discount on 4 or 5 purchases. It's worth a shot.

you could try doing the educational thing, but technically its illegal if YOU arent a student. the student has to be the main user of the product. so basically it depends on your ethics....

no, in order to get an edu discount you either need to be (or know a generous one) a K-12 teacher (faculty) or a higher-ed (2 year school or better) student or staff/faculty member...

and im 90% sure they can buy as much software as they like, the only thing that is limited is hardware...

Well if I can upgrade from 10.1.5 then I'll just pick the generic Panther from that one website. Then I won't need to lie to my favorite company(Apple) just to try for then discount. I was gonna ask my friend to get it for me but I don't think he wanted to use his credit card. Well guys maybe I'll try to order it thanks for your replies.

Otherwise, I just bought Panther on Ebay - only $67 (incl. ship).

I would feel much better about the purchase getting it from apple... you get the full retail version and not some secondhand used copy that someone sold after making copies of the disks... you would be better off pirating it this way the guy doesn't make any $...

make your friend use his CC, its not that big of a deal and it will improve his credit!

he can call apple's # if he is weary about using his CC over the internet...

$67 is a good price though for a perfectly legal copy of panther. people who want to pirate the software will do so regardless, and i don't see any real argument against buying second-hand. if you have the retail cds and everything, you own the license, and it is certainly not the secondhand buyer's responsibility to make sure the person they purchased it from isn't using software illegally.

I believe you should be able to "Archive & Install" and keep your previous OS. Correct me if I'm wrong...
