The Pioneer 106 can burn on 2 layers !!!

From hardmac.com:

The Pioneer 106 is already a couple of months old. The DVD Forum hasn't yet defined a DVD-R double layer norm.

However, during the CES, Pioneer took a 106 burner and flashed its firmware and without touching anything else burnt a double layer DVD-R.

That's a heavy blow inflicted to the DVD+R Forum which is ahead of Pioneer. Clients will now seek magic firmwares from the manufacturers rather than change the burner.

The original story is avaible here

What do you think geeks ? I have the 106 and i'm very interested about it

Why would they be able to do this with the a06 but not the a05?

    woo.. interesting.

I know the DVR-107 is coming very soon or already in retail. 8X is cool, but I still believe that slower speed is better. The bare Pioneer DVR-106 Black is selling at around $125. My stock Philips combo drive in my MDD (FW800) blows and I am considering a SuperDrive as a primary drive and put the stock combo drive as a back up.

Burning on a dual-layer media is definitely a plus for me.

    RIAA/MPAA.. knock knock..

    I just ordered a 15" Powerbook w/ superdrive.

Is the Pioneer 106 you talk about the superdrive I'll be getting?

No. The 106 is a desktop drive. The Powerbook's Superdrive is a special laptop model.

Your specific SuperDrive model should be Matshita DVD-R UJ-816.

Is the 106 special or will older SuperDrives be able to do this with the new media and firmware? Especially, would laptops like my 12" PBG4 867mhz do it? That would BE AWESOME!!!! I bet the media is expensive. That still ROCKS.

So do people think the new firmware will help PBG4 12" Soopadrives burn multilayer?

Aquatic: probably not, but there is a DVD-RW firmware about.

9.4GB of data to burn at 1x = two hours plus burn time.

I definitely got that firmware update from Cynikal for 2x DVDR and DVD-RW and 16x CD burning. That was a lot more than I expected, to expect dual layer burning out of my hardware would be crazy! But I was already so impressed with the 2x firmware patch I'm thirsty for more yummy firmware hackin'.

Even with firmware (anyone know where to get the dual layer firmware?) what media can support the dual layer burning?

OT, but what is the difference between the A06 and the 106, or the A07 and the 107?
