The version coming out on the 16th is version 4. Was there ever a version 3??? The version I have is version 2. Why would apple skip version 3?

Aple skipped version 3 to make the version number coincide with the iLife title, which is named for the year it's coming out. So it's iLife '04 with iPhoto4, iTunes 4, iMOvie 4, iDVD 4 and Garage Band, uh, 1.0. Purely artificial, and no, you didn't miss iPhoto 3.

Do you think, then, that this sets a somewhat reliable, predictable release pattern for iLife, from here out?

In other words, for the remainder of 2004, there will simply be small updates, bug fixes, new instrument/loops/amp models for GarageBand, minor ehancements all around, etc. for iLife 04. Then at MWSF next year, they'll roll out a brand new, all-apps-sporting-all-new-features major upgrade of iLife? iLife 05?

    I was just wondering...

Seems likely, I guess. Makes planning/waiting easy.

They'd have to get all the separate iApp development teams on a unified schedule of some sort.

Sounds like it to me. A lot of software is being released this way now. It's easier for the software companies, and psychologically easier for consumers (They can count on spending "x" dollars about the same time every year).

I bet that's the plan, but you wonder, while Apple has tried to release new versions of these apps each year, the release dates for that tend to be a few months here or there, usually there, as in a little more than a year. I imagine it's harder to release updates in under 12 months, but very eay to have the ship dates lsip a little. Apple could afford to let the iLife updates lsip a few times, but in the long term, it will probably be hard to not skip a year at some point. Of course, by then, marketing will probably have a new direction and they probably won't care if version numbers line up with the release date.

I would also bank on iTunes being on it's own update schedule. Just like iTunes 3 was part of iLife 1.0 and iTunes 4 is part of iLife 04, I would guess that iTunes 5 will be released before the rest get a bump.
