They actually do make pretty good stuff now, which, considering the manifest incompetence of their early PCs is pretty impressive. But nobody's beating Dell. Really, the only hope is that Dell's increasingly dodgy quality control starts driving people away before Gateway disappears.

Instead, Neff pointed out, the Poway, California, company said on Monday that it expects to report revenue of about $880 million, down from its previous forecast of $925 million to $975 million.
The company, which had foreseen a loss of 9 cents to 15 cents per share, said it now expects to report an operating loss at the low end of that range. Several Wall Street research analysts cut their estimates to a loss of 15 cents per share from an earlier consensus of 12 cents per share.
Gateway blamed the shortfall not only on promotions by competitors that analysts said ate into its market share, but also on difficulty in obtaining media center PCs and high-definition television models from its suppliers.
