Pixlet is for video professionals that need to send ultra-high-resolution (ie, theatrical film, not DVD) proofs across a network.

Pixar uses it for dailies and editing. (Timecodes are then extracted and used to piece together the film from the original full resolution archives.)

It's not for consumers, or DVDs.

Uh, sure. Knock yourself out. Still won't do you much good unless you're sending it to someone who needs the ultra-high-res. :/

(The reason it's in iMovie is because iMovie simply supports whatever QuickTime does.)

Also, if memory serves me right, you have to be running Panther to play a Pixlet movie. It is not OS or platform independent.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

If you want capture video using applications like iGrab and send the file over to friends or post it on the web, pixlets provides very nice compression and quality. I think it is useful for end users as well.

Quicktime can handle pixlet playback i think...

Here is what I know. When I make a title with livetype, 800x600 quality lags horribly while playing on my machine (15" AlBook, but 4200RPM HD \)

I know that when I compress with other stuff the quality gets so S***y it's not even useable. But when I use pixlet, even at it's lowest settings they are not as bad as other stuff. So pixlet rules!

What happened to that pixlet example on Apple's site? Couldn't find it the other day.
