I just odered Panther on the 13th and it should be here on the 16th. I was just wondering if it might some with the iLife 2004 apps, if it does that would be really cool. I doubt it but if it's included I won't complain.
'Twould be nice, but Panther only includes Panther.
iLife is a separate package,
Oh really?
Odd. When I bought Panther and erased my drive before installing, it included iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie. Not iLife? Of course, these are the older versions, not the new iLife 04.
yeah, both GB and iDVD require a DVD drive to be installed due to their size... I don't see apple bulking up the already large size of their OS install for these applications that can be purchased separately...
iTunes will be included... but I'm not so sure about the rest of the suite...
of course unless they make a "DVD Install" version of panther available... (thats what is shipping on new macs...)
Apple are only giving iTunes for free now, but they prob will still give out iMovie and iPhoto with the operating system. However, only iTunes can be updated for free.
It'd be a bit of a bait n' switch move on Apple's part if you were to buy Panther now and had to update iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes separately (I can understand iDVD and GarageBand, though).
"Buy Mac OSX. You can create movies, download your digital photos, and keep track of your music- for an additional fee!" ....sounds a bit like another company.
The point is though that Mac give out the whole of iLife when you buy a Mac. They give you the small downloads (iPhoto, iMovie and of course iTunes) on the OS CD - they can;t fit on garage band - which looks rubbish anyway or iDVD because of their size. The only difference is you used to be able to update Imovie and iPhoto over the internet, now you can't. Apple are trying to make more profit, were people really going to pay $49 for one app iDVD, they're making it more appealing, putting in garageband and removing free downloads.
are you disagreeing with my rubbish statement? It's not as if it's new technology either, this should have been out ten years ago. (the too big comment is because it requires a DVD-ROM because it wont fit on a CD. - also how can apple justify charging £70 more for a few more instruments, apple are going to far.)
Is anyone else fed up of apple trying to own everything on the apple platform ( i know not related to thread). Don;t get me wrong i love Apple Apps and i think they all work brilliantly, but it's nice to have other companies making apps.
EDIT constructive comment : I think we will have to wait and see. iDVD is a separate install because of the sheer size of the program. iPhoto and iMovie were relatively small, so they could put it on the 10.3 3-CDs. I mean, I would much rather have one DVD to install than 3 CDs. But, that is off topic, no?
Actually, in Britain, collectives are referred to in the plural. It's a linguistic quirk, not a grammar error.
And the reason that GarageBand needs a DVD is not likely because of the software instruments, but because of the 1000 loops. Audio takes up lots of space.
And now, to relate to the thread: I'm sure a new Panther package will include iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie 4 at some point. And you still get the old versions anyway, which are definitely usable. (the iPhoto upgrade is actually the one I'm seeing as most pressing, because of speed issues).
Apple Computers is made up of a board of Directors - THEY make the decisions. Therefore when I refer to Apple I will use 'are' because it isn't one person calling the shots. (For example you would say the 'government are' not the 'government is' - actually i think you can say both, damn!)
Any way I take back what I said about GarageBand being rubbish, I had a good look at it and it looks quite good, very intuitive and quite impressive compared to other programs of similar calibre!
Also I was aware of the reason for GarageBand and iDVD not being included with Panther - I thought I had stated that they were too big!
I agree with agent302, i really want the iPhoto upgrade, i don't care about the rest! So it's a shame that that isn't available for internet download.
(Pleaase feal three to coment on my speling, as yo find necesary)
For example you would say the 'government are' not the 'government is' - actually i think you can say both, damn!
Interesting that you can say it both ways. My understanding is that agent302 is right: this is a difference between British and American English. British speakers think that collective nouns (like group, committee, maybe government) are plural, where as Americans think these are singular. I don't think any American would say "the government are".
At least this was what they taught me back when I was taking linguistics.
Edited to acknowledge that agent302 already made this point.
I know I don't have to buy it, I was just commenting on the fact that I would like to get iPhoto and iMovie for free. I forked out for a Mac and that used to mean that you get free upgrades for certain programs. I completely understand why they are now charging for them, and I know they're not charging a lot, but I just wish they weren't. However, these apps (Photo, Movie and Tunes), as they appear to be at the moment, should be included with the OS. \
And as far as the English comment is concerned, we had it first! (Americans have already removed the 'u' from colour, and the ph from sulphur (or should i say sulfur) - did you realise that the new American spelling has replaced the British spelling. That's enough, let us keep the plural!
If you hadn't noticed I'd taken back that comment. I never said iLife was rubbish (I'm a great fan of both iTunes and iPhoto). I just didn't think GarageBand seemed that good. But after having a look at it I said that it did look quite good.

iLife is a separate package, and only comes bundled with new Macs. You can buy it separately, though.
Sorry to bust your bubble. m.

Moving to Mac OS X.
...it included iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie.
But not iDVD, right?
I would not expect future versions of Panther/ Mac OS X 10.x to include iDVD or GarageBand-- IOW, not the FULL "iLife suite".
...but I could be wrong.
iTunes will be included... but I'm not so sure about the rest of the suite...
