Quake, Halo, Counter-Strike for Mac

I've used these programs back in College, but they were on my old windows cr@p machine.

Now that I'm ALL APPLE... Do these programs run well on the G5, and do you have good access to network gaming (multiplayer).

Or are they all old programs not yet optimized for the G5 platform?

Thanks for the Words of Wisdom!

everything that runs in OS X (pretty much the wide range of those apps) you got it on the G5.

multiplayer is possible as long as everyone has the same build of the game. for instance v. 436 unreal tournament needs to be played with v.436 of unreal tournament just like with any other combination of pc's and mac's and other platforms (linux).

No Counter-Strike for the mac, and it probably never will be. Maybe you could attempt to run it in VPC 7, when that's out

Quake3 and Halo run on Mac OS X. Counter Strike was ported to Mac but never shipped. Some baloney excuse about networking problems.

If you want to play games on a network, you should have no problems. A good place to play other Mac users is gameranger

it lets you chat with other mac gamers and start games (depends on whether the game is supported). It also lists servers as well.

There's a native OSX port of Quake1 on macupdate.com, if you're really into classics. Unlike some other games, Quake1 is cross-platform multiplayer, so you can tap right into the old-school communities.

I just beat Halo for Mac, great game, buy it! Quake I have no affection for, and it crashes frequently on my G5. Unreal Tourney 2003 kicks all ass compared to Q3, and as somebody mentioned, there's an UT 1 OS X port out there.

PS, UT2004 will really be worth it, so don't bother getting 2003.

Halo, Counterstrike, and UT 2003 all can run on a piece of $200 hardware - it's called an XBox. Works with multiplayer too. I'd suggest using one of those for gaming instead of using your Mac. However, UT 2003, Quake 3, and Halo are all available for Mac as well, if you wish. UT 2003 should run REALLY well... it ran really well on a 1 GHz eMac, and your G5 is much more powerful than that.

how does UT play on a 1Ghz 12 Albook?

Next month! I played it at Macworld at the ATI booth and the guy said it would be out in February.

I'm just re-discovering the goodness of the Action-Quake mod for Quake 2. And there's an OS X-native Q2 client (check versiontracker.com). So much fun, especially online with a few friends against bots.

Who'd have thought that one day a LAPTOP would be able to run Quake2, in a window, on top of Unix, with incredible performance? :-) I guess I'm living in the past ...

    back to work,
