Anyone else using optical digital audio on G5? Problems?
My G5 is hooked up to a surround-sound receiver's DVD digital input, and I normally listen to sound from my G5 via the speakers hooked up to that receiver. I also have an analog connection from the computer to the receiver's CD input -- which turns out to be a useful back-up.
I'm occasionally finding that there's no sound when I go to play music, or play a movie, but I've also discovered that I can get sound back by switching over from the DVD digital input to the CD analog input.
Playing around with the receiver's settings doesn't fix anything. Playing around with the Sound Preference Panel doesn't fix anything. They only way I've found to get my digital sound back is to reboot my computer. Analog works properly all of the time.
I have no idea what causes this. I've never heard the sound shut off in the middle of playing something, so I haven't caught this bug in the act. I leave my computer on all of the time, and I don't let it sleep -- I only let the monitor down -- so it isn't a sleep-related bug.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Any better fix than rebooting?
